Markets, Democracy and Holes on the Road

This morning Michael Tan (Padang Lallang) and me accompanied by the Yang Dipertua of the Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai together with a group of co-workers from Michael’s office and my office and the Majlis toured the public markets in Bkt Mertajam.

It was a fruitful day…we started from Berapit at about 8am, proceeded to Kg. Baru and then Bukit Mertajam and completed the program at about midday.

Most of the problems in the markets are not very difficult to resolve, but the thing is, the old adminstration has neglected solving them and therefore the problems accumulated and worsened. This was one of the main issues in my mind after March 8th.

In fact my Special Assistant Steven had worked together with Mr. Oon, MPSP councillor to expedite the clean up of the ceilings, walls and even sewage in Kg. Baru market recently.

So today was really a check to one of my mental to-do list. Show them, YDP, real time what the people are facing. And get them down to work fast. And I mean FAST. My team and I will do frequent a spot checks to ensure everyone does their work properly.

Along the way this morning…

I saw a banner at Kg. Besar badminton court (used to be the former mca ADUN’s office) saying in Chinese “Ong Kok Fooi, Where are you?” and some other complains.

Although very disappointed with the actions, I respect the democratic rights of the People to protest and voice their grudges this way.

But the thing is, my door is open for the Rakyat to share their burdens and problems with me, and I have different channels emails, handphones and my co-workers, Steven, Xin Yin, Mr. Goh, Mr. Ang. We are all very ready to hear the Rakyat’s problem. I do not think that we have reach a stage of putting up banners for protest. If this is a work of sabotage by my political opponents, I urge them to be more conscientious and gentlemanly. They have never been able to be good players in the democracy and now are trying to misuse democratic space for their ulterior agendas. I mean, if la this is their work.

But anyway, I received a complain about the condition of the tar road along Kg. Besar on Thursday and have initiated an investigation. I found out that the road does not belong to any state of federal authority. It was built on private land. The MCA assemblyman who built the road did not consider any long term plans for it. And it was unkempt ever since. After I found out that there were some holes on the road, I approve yesterday to pay for repair. And today, the banner’s up. I hope the party involved in the protest can be more generous to us and allow some time. I received the complains and initiated investigation immediately and has given instructions for repair on Friday. Pls be fair..thank you very much.

Let’s work together so that we can serve you well.
