IT was a day-long fun outing for 119 underprivileged children from four welfare homes in Penang when they took part in a treasure hunt and roller skating recently.

The outing was organised by a new youth organisation called Project GOssip to provide an opportunity for the less fortunate children to enjoy new experiences just like other children.

The children were from St Joseph’s Home, Children Protection Society, Ramakrishna Orphanage and Persatuan Rumah Cahaya Harapan.

GOssip director Bernard Hor said the event,Kids’ Day Out — Youth CSR (corporate social responsibility) Community Outreach, was organised in Penang for the first time.

“The aim is to educate youths on issues that women face nowadays and to inspire advocacy in youths,” he said at the Central Skate Park in Queensbay Mall.

Project GOssip has three phases — GO Away, GO Safe and GO Celebrate — that highlight the issues of violence against women, safe sex and appreciation of the roles of women in society.

In her speech, state Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi urged the children to remain strong during difficult times.

“There are people around who care and are willing to grow with you. “No matter how hard a situation is, there’s always hope,” she said.
