Press Release: Penang State Women’s Day Carnival 2009

The Penang State Government under the auspice of the State Women, Family and Community Development Committee in collaboration with Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara and various local women NGOs have successfully organized the first State level Women’s Day Carnival in conjunction with the International Women’s Day celebration.

 

The two-day Carnival was held at Gurney Plaza over the weekends from 7-8 March 2009. The wife of the Chief Minister of Penang, Betty Chew who is also the President of Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara opened the event on Saturday. There was a variety of activities held over the two days, including exhibitions by local women NGOs, theateric performances, health check, financial consultations and forums discussing women-related issues. A total of 23 women NGOs took part in the exhibition which was entitled “Empowering Women Through Knowledge and Information”.

 

Among the VIP who attended the event includes Ong Kok Fooi, State Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairperson, Chong Eng, Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament and a vocal woman leader, Dato’ Kee Phaik Cheen, former Gerakan executive councilor, women leaders from various groups in Penang and wives of Penang state assemblymen and parlimentarians.

 

Ong Kok Fooi expressed her satisfaction that this is the first time the Penang State Government is organizing such an event and it is a recognition by the State of the importance of women in our society. She hoped that this program will be a stepping stone towards empowering women in Penang in all areas of life.
