1st National & YMCA International Ballroom & Hip Hop Competition

First of all, I would like to thank the organizing committee for your kind invitation to open this very beautiful event. On their behalf and on behalf of the Penang State Government, I would like welcome all the participants especially our outstation guests and our guests from other countries to Penang, the Pearl of the Orient.

It is a great honour for me to greet you to the 1st National & YMCA International Ballroom and Hip Hop Competition. Thank you very much for your support and participation.

The Penang YMCA is one of our grand old NGOs. It has been around for more than a hundred years, serving the community through their recreational and social programs. Today’s program is yet another witness to YMCA’s undying effort to bring the community together, to promote positive social interaction, to do charity and along with all these good works, to have fun. This is distinctively YMCA.

I would like to congratulate Datin Goh and the Ballroom Dance Club because you have demonstrated the core value of YMCA, that is, the promotion of wholesome person in a community.

I have always encouraged people, whether through my work or in my personal life to have a balanced life. Life is not merely about attaining material success. It is vital that we maintain, in YMCA’s century old tradition, a spiritual, mental and physical wellness of the person. In our century, when work and demands of life challenge the individual to the highest degree, it is important that we know how to put down our work and spend time on recreational activities. Recreation, as the word suggests, will not only refresh us but also re-orientate us before we set the gear to “work mode” again.

I think in this sense ballroom dancing seemed to be the perfect type of recreational activity.  Ballroom dancing is not only a healthy exercise, where we can sweat it out after a hard day of work but it is in itself an act of balancing. We not only have to be in tune with the music, but also in sync with our fellow dancer. And today, to throw in a bonus, we are all here to participate in a good work. The funds raised through this program will be channeled to the Y-Self Reliance Centre’s Handicapped in Hearing Camp. Again, this is distinctively YMCA. Kudos to the organizer and members of the Association.

I do not want to take up more of your time. Let’s remember, there’ll only be one winner in a competition, but life is more than that, we can all be a winner today, if we come here this evening being blessed and leaving here blessing others. Good luck, but most importantly, have fun. Thank you.
