Organisers have lined up free water sports workshops

FREE water sports workshops for the public will be held in conjunction with the Pe-nang International Skimboarding Competition at the Hard Rock Hotel beach front in Batu Fer-ringhi on Saturday.

Penang Skimboarding Associa-tion chairman Kee Jet Shon said the skimboarding, paddleboard and windsurfing workshops would be held from 9am until 6pm.

He said there would also be many food and drinks stalls as well as game booths in line with the event’s Beach Carnival theme.

The competition, in its fourth year, is organised by the association with the collaboration of the state Government and Penang Sports Council.

State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Develop-ment Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said she expected participation of 120 skimboarders from six countries – Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

Kee, who is also the event’s organising chairman, said skimboarders who wanted to take part in the competition could still register on the day of the event from 8am to 9am.

The registration fee is RM30 and each participant will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag.

“Visitors will also have the chance to witness night skimboarding, which will be held for the first time in Asia, on the night of the competition from 8pm to 11pm.

“This will be the time for the skimboarders to relax and have fun while showing off their skills. There will be six spotlights fixed to shine on the shore,” Kee said, adding that admission for spectators is free.

He said skimboarding, a boardsport that uses a skimboard (which looks like a surfboard but is significantly smaller), was catching on in the country as local wave conditions favoured it over surfing.

“Surfing is not very suitable in Malaysia, especially on the West Coast, as there are not many point breaks (permanent obstructions like rocks or reefs that cause waves to break) here.

“We do, however, have shore breaks (a condition when waves break directly on the shore) which makes skimboarding possible,” Kee told a press conference recently.

He said skimboarding con-ditions were best during the monsoon period from June to September.
