Giant mooncake in the works

A GIGANTIC mooncake and four huge lanterns are set to enthrall an estimated 30,000-strong crowd at the state government’s grand Mid-Autumn Festival 2010 celebrations in Bukit Mertajam on Sept 18.

Penang state executive councillor Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said the 128kg mooncake, measuring 100cm in diameter and 33cm in height, would be the biggest ever made in Penang.

“There have been bigger mooncakes made in the country in the past, but this one will be the first in the country to have eight flavours in it.

“Usually, the gigantic ones are done with only two or three flavours,” she told reporters after chairing the event’s committee meeting on Wednesday.

Ong said the giant lanterns, each measuring 1.2m tall, would be placed at the main entrance to the event at Lorong Maju Utama 1 in the Maju Utama Business Centre in Kampung Baru.

She said the event, from 11am to midnight, would showcase performances by artistes from its main sponsor, Astro, as well as by martial arts and sukan rakyat exponents and pocket bike enthusiasts.

There will also be exhibitions on traditional handicrafts, classic trishaws, bicycles and motorcycles, as well as vintage cars, superbikes and MyVi cars.

“The highlight of the event will be a lantern parade from the Jit Sin Independent School on Jalan Aston to Insa Dunia Food Court on Jalan Maju at 6pm,” she said, adding that a colouring contest for children would also be held.

Ong said 5,000 moon biscuits with sweet fillings as well as 1,000 paper lanterns with poems strung on them would be distributed to visitors at the festival.

She said the event was jointly organised by the Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple Association and the Hokkien, Teow Chew, Hakka, Kwong Waai Siew and Hainan associations.

“This is their eighth consecutive year organising the event.

“But, from this year onwards, we have adopted it as one of the state Tourism Committee’s major events in Seberang Prai,” she said.
