World Children’s Day & Chef Cook For Charity Day

Penang exco member Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said about 40 stalls would be set up selling delicacies from 10am to 4pm.

She said the proceeds would be channelled towards the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM).

Besides a jumble sale selling various kitchen utensils and second-hand furniture, there would also be a dedicated children’s activity programme featuring carriage rides, mini petting zoo, face painting and clown performances.

“Many people aren’t aware about autism. These special kids must not be forgotten, as they really need society’s care,” Ong, who is state Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman.

The event is jointly organised by Ong’s office, NASOM, the Penang Sports Council and the Chefs Association of Malaysia Penang Chapter.

NASOM chairman Rosli Hanafi explained that autism is a life-long development disability that affects children at birth.

Its advisor Dr Sim Joo Seng said autistic kids need more attention and help, otherwise they would face difficulties adapting to a formal school setting.

He added that they hoped to raise at least RM80,000 from the event.

All sales will be done on a coupon basis, with each booklet, priced at RM20, on sale at NASOM Penang Branch’s premises at 32 and 34 Jalan Pantai Jerejak in Bayan Lepas, as well as various other locations to be announced later.

Visitors to the carnival may also participate in a guess-the-value-of-the-hamper contest for only RM1. The one who comes up with a figure closest to the actual value gets to take the hamper home.
